Week #13: “You’re a Tough Act To Follow”

After a couple of Celtic weeks, I’m heading back to some country music.

(The two have much more in common that one might think. One of the influences on country music comes from the 19th century Scot/Irish settlers in places like Tennessee and the Carolinas.)

This is another song that I began a while back and have now finished. Although it is long ago and far away, I still remember the feeling of a broken heart or two. Who doesn’t? It’s one of the most primal of human emotions. It’s also a complex emotion: it’s loss, humiliation, anger, yearning, pain all rolled up into one searing flame that etches its initials into your heart.

Which means, it’s perfect for country music: Three chords and the truth. (Actually, this is six chords, but I don’t think they interfere with the truth.)

I have another country tune queued up for next week, trying to bring some order to this process. Like sticking with one genre for a couple of weeks and alternating original music and cover tunes.
