Week #14: I Just Can’t Face The Night

One thing this project has taught me is this: don’t throw out old notebooks. At least not before seeing what’s in there.

I found a fragment of this idea in an old songwriting notebook, from the time I was writing as a staff songwriter for a company in Nashville. It was heading off in a a cliched direction, a “my baby left me and …”

Now, in the upper altitudes of age that I am, it has a whole different meaning.

Hemingway once said:

“It is awfully easy to be hard-boiled about everything in the daytime, but at night it is another thing.”

There are songs about sunny afternoons. And songs about 3 A.M. in the morning. Both are necessary to keep our sanity.
