Week #12: Star of the County Down

When I played music for a living, I LOATHED St. Patrick’s Day. Yes, it was a day to make a lot of money, doing three or more gigs in that one day, part of which went to the replacing my shoes which invariably ended up with vomit on them. (Not from me.)

It was a day of abominable green beer, green sweaters, “Kiss Me I’m Irish” pins, and tears for the Fenians who died in the Easter Rebellion which, brave as it was, was a thoroughly harebrained scheme.

That said, I am proud of my Irish heritage and feel no need to drink to unconsciousness on this day to prove it.

The Irish musicians I have been fortunate enough to meet, learn from, and play with over the past twenty-five years are, to a person, outstanding human beings. They have shown me kindness, laughter, music, and given me more stories than I could tell if I lived to be one hundred.

So here’s to the “pure drop” today, to the poets and bards, the writers and the friends who can, if you listen closely, make music that would make the angels weep.

Thanks for reading. Thanks for listening.
