O Holy Night 04:27

about

I can’t think of a season in which music plays a more integral role. Or one that has more songs from which to choose.

In the Bleak Midwinter. My favorite “hymn” of the season. Lyrics by Christina Rosetti and music by Gustav Holst which, no doubt, explains the beauty of this composition..

Don Oíche úd i mBeithil. This is a Celtic tune that goes all the way back to the seventh century. It’s easy to tell this is a Celtic tune because the melody is haunting and the spelling is indecipherable.

O Come, O Come Emmanuel. This is also an ancient melody and goes back to the ninth or tenth century. I learned it originally in Latin, Veni Veni Emmanuel. By leaving the verses blank, I thought this could work either for Chanukah or Christmas.

O Holy Night. I’m just borrowing this song. Bob Hamilton, my father, still owns it.

A REMINDER: All proceeds — from streaming, digital downloads or CDs (when available) — go to St. Joe's Kitchen in Pittsfield as part of Dinner Music.
