about

Watching TV last night (“Firefly Lane,” and yes, we’re into the very deep cuts of Netflix), this song was used to bookend an episode. At the beginning, it was the feather-light, ethereal soprano of Joni Mitchell’s first recording of the song in 1966. At the end, it was the recording with orchestra, from 2000, in which her voice is at least an octave lower, bourbon and cigarette-tinged, weary.

Like any great piece of art, this song is a prism. Depending on where you’re standing, it will cast a completely different palette of colors. I hear it go from questioning (1966) to acceptance (2000) — acceptance that we ultimately don’t know much at all.

This is a piano version of the song. But the lyrics stick to this melody like glue.
