Blackbird

Doing a cover song can be easy or, surprisingly, very hard. Such is the case with “Blackbird.”

Listen to Sarah McLachlan’s version of “Blackbird.” It is exquisite. She doesn’t change a thing from the original McCartney arrangement and STILL it has a flavor all its own. Her voice, her guitar playing put a curve on the song that makes it well … different.

And that’s what a cover is supposed to be: something new and different made from something old and familiar.

I recorded “Blackbird” this week using the original arrangement. I had the guitar part cold, I’ve know it for fifty years. I had the vocal part cold, I’ve know that for fifty years. And when I finished, I sat back and listened, I thought: well, that sucks. You’ve got to bring more to the party than that.
