Dog Days

I had planned to do the Hollies’ “Look Through Any Window” this week. I spent probably six hours trying to get the drum part right (it’s a great drum part.) But I simply could not get the drums to sound right.

Herein lies the lesson of the week: sometimes, giving up is the best thing you can do. I packed up the drums, closed down the computer and — it being one of the rare beautiful days so far this summer — sat out on the back deck with my acoustic guitar.

An hour or so later, I had the skeleton for this tune. And something I had not done yet this year — a solo acoustic guitar piece. I’ve shied away from this genre because my left hand is in such terrible shape. But through a little change in tunings, I was able to get this. Sometimes, you not only have to look through the window, you have to open it.
