The Wild Geese

about

To start, get Canadian geese out of your mind. Banish them. Go on, let them go.

Okay. Now, we can talk.

We are heading into, in the Christian calendar, the season of Lent. That is one framework, though certainly not the only one, through which this pre-season of growth can be experienced.

In the Celtic tradition, the wild goose was associated with the Holy Spirit. Not some ethereal fluffy white dove whose only apparent talent was hovering. But a wild and untamed creative power, almost literally a force of nature.

There’s also the Mary Oliver poem, “Wild Geese,” which gets close to the same idea:

“… the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting”

The world will turn, and soon the season of wild and untamed growth will be upon us.

Thanks for reading. Thanks for listening.
