Week 11: “Will You Go, Lassie, Go? (or, variously, “Wild Mountain Thyme”)

Here’s a tune that’s at least 200 years old — possibly older. And it is not Irish, but most certainly Scottish.

I have never gone a-picking wild mountain thyme around the blooming heather, but I do know what feeling this song is trying to evoke. It is that first hint of spring in the air, the day when the windows can be flung open, and the smells when the earth is wet and dark, and the purple of lilac draws the bees, and it seems, once again, the world will return to life.

Most religions have “a” day that marks this, but I’ll take this tune over any hymn any day of the week.

I’m very close to falling behind in this “Song A Week.” I returned from abroad, last Friday, with a 100% Grade-A dose of COVID which has thrown off the schedule by lingering around. “Star of the County Down” needs some work for St. Patrick’s Day. I will need the luck of the Irish to make it.

Thanks for reading. Thanks for listening.
