Week 10: If These Walls Could Speak

When I think of the places I have lived, I hear the voices of those with whom I lived in those places.

Some are dead and some are living. Many have faded into the mist of time. But each voice has its own particular melody — and I would know it anywhere. They blend into conversation and laughter, talk that is both whimsical and deadly serious.

Many times, when preaching, I would say I thought prayer seeped into sanctuary walls. Perhaps the same does in the places we’ve lived. We leave a little bit of ourselves in the wood and nails, the wallboard and the molding of every place our bodies, and spirits, inhabited.

And in the middle of the night, or when you’re alone, and the house makes strange noises or the wind rushes through the rafters — it’s nothing to worry about. It’s just the conversations seeping back out from the walls.
