Week #9: Memento Mori / Ash Wednesday

I write this from Rome, the Eternal City.

Strange name, that. Because Rome, from its ruins to its riches, its archaeological digs beside apartment buildings, puts a spin on the word “eternal.” The city may be long-lived, but the fame and fortune of the powerful are, ultimately, reduced to monuments. No matter how large in life, they are now as still as the stone that marks their brief time on this earth.

The Stoics knew and Buddhists know this idea of “memento mori” well: Remember your time is brief here.

Ash Wednesday is the Christian version of that idea. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

And yet in this city, the cradle of Christianity, everyone had an iPhone but I didn’t see one person with ashes.

No matter, really. Time exacts its toll, observed or not.

Thanks for reading. Thanks for listening.
