From Brooklyn Bridge

about

In the short period of time that I lived in Brooklyn, all the gigs I did were in Manhattan. Brooklyn was not, then, the Paris of the Northeast. It was more like the Brooklyn of Jackie Gleason and “The Honeymooners” at 328 Chauncey Street in Bensonhurst.

Since I had to move a Fender Rhodes piano for these gigs, I had to take my car. (More on being a Piano Mover in an upcoming Substack piece.). Flatbush Avenue to Beverly Road to Ocean Parkway where, just before the turn onto the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, the skyline of Manhattan came into view.

That sight is seared into my memory.

And then, to the Brooklyn Bridge, where with every tire thump across the span, I got closer to what novelist William Martin called “The City of Dreams.”

New York seems dreamlike to me now. And I hope, in this piece, to capture a little bit of that feeling.
